Welcome to St John’s Hyde Park
We are delighted that you have chosen to join our community today, especially if you are joining us for the first time. For those who have come as a family with young children, Kids’ Club meets during the service in the Parish Hall. Further information about St John’s can be found on our web site: www.stjohns-hydepark.com.
St John’s, like the Hyde Park Estate, wants to be part of a dog-friendly community. We welcome people to bring their dogs with them to church but we ask that they are mindful of the need for dogs not to disturb others at worship. If your furry friend begins to bark or to feel uncomfortable, please do feel free to take him or her for a walk outside.
Children and Young Families
We are delighted to have families with children as members of our congregation. Kids’ Club meets this morning in the hall with Red Balloon – the children go out after the Collect and re-join their families in time for communion. Toilets with changing facilities are available near the entrance of the church.
Hearing the Service
St John’s has an Induction Loop System so if you have a hearing aid, please switch it to the ’T’ setting.
Advent 2022
Nativity Play, 18th December, 10am
This morning is our annual nativity play which takes the place of the sermon. At the end of the performance, we all join the children on the second chorus in singing “Away in a Manger”. Children are then invited into the parish hall for refreshments before returning for Communion. Afterwards, sherry and mince pies will be served at the back of church.
Advent Anthems
The anthems at the morning service during Advent are all from musicals chosen to compliment seasonal themes:
Hope
This Is the Moment from Jekyll and Hyde by F Wildman, arranged T Chinn
Peace
Sunday from Sunday in the Park with George by S Sondheim
Joy
Look at Me from The Witches of Eastwick by D P Rowe
Love
Something to Believe In from Newsies by A Menkin, arranged Mac Huff
This morning’s anthem is Something to Believe In from Newsies. It is a love song between Jack and Katherine, the main characters from the musical, which talks about finding the courage to seek your dreams.
Kids’ Club Charity Stall
The St John’s Kids Club will be celebrating the spirit of Christmas by selling hand made crafts and gifts at the Sunday service. The children are raising money for the St Matthew’s food bank this year.
Christmas 2022
Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, 18th December 6pm
Our traditional carol service kicks off the countdown to Christmas. This year the service is centred around Karl Jenkins’ Stella Natalis. The choir will be accompanied by a magnificence of musicians and the service will be followed by a fizz and panettone reception. This is one of the biggest musical treats of the year for all the family. Invite your friends and neighbours to join us for this festive community celebration.
Parish Carolling
6.30pm Wednesday 21st December
You are invited to join us for a jolly traditional Christmas evening as we walk around the parish to sing some carols with our choral scholars and collect money for food bank of St Matthew’s, Bayswater. Meet at the church, then we will walk around to several pubs, give them our best musical delight under Robert’s conducting and end at the Victoria for a mince pie.
Christmas Eve
4.00pm – Crib Service
A unique service for all ages, telling the story of Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus in the crib, join us as we begin the feast of the birth of Christ.
11.30pm – Midnight Mass
Enjoy the first mass of Christmas in a candlelit church, singing Christmas carols led by the choir and orchestra. The setting will be Schubert’s Missa Sancti Nicolai.
Christmas Day
10am – Family Festival Eucharist
Children are invited to come along dressed up in their fairy costumes and sparkly shoes or Christmas pyjamas and to bring their toys with them if they wish. Sing Christmas carols with the choir, accompanied by orchestra.
1st January 2023
The choir and music staff are on a well deserved break this Sunday. We use our Folk Tunes setting with a guest soloist and organist. This is the only service on this Sunday – there is no 8am service nor evening service.
Christmas Flowers
Remember a loved one by making a donation to this year’s Christmas flowers. Complete the slip inside your order of service and leave it with Bryan Sollenberger. A list of those in whose memory donations are given will be displayed in the porch.
EPIPHANY 2023
The arrival of the Magi, after their long journey following a star seeking Jesus, is one of the oldest festivals of the Christian Church. In the Eastern and Russian Orthodox Churches, this is the equivalent of Christmas. St John’s will celebrate Epiphany with a festival Eucharist on Sunday, 8th January 2023. After the service, there will be a reception of fizz and finger food. Members of the congregation are asked to bring a plate of finger food with them and, in order to help with numbers, please sign up on the form in the porch, indicating that they will be able to attend and what food they will be bringing with them.

Requiem in Pacem
It is with much sadness that we learned of the death of Janet Williams on 24th November. Janet was a long term resident in the parish and a regular member of the congregation until moving to St Teresa’s Care Home some year ago. There will be a funeral service for her at St John’s on Tuesday, 20th December, at 11am.
