Children and Young Families are very much part of our life here at St John’s, whether through our involvement in local schools, providing space for playgroups during the week or the important role children play during services on Sunday mornings.

Children's Events

St John's provides a warm and dry space where parents run a series of playgroups through the week.

  • Wednesday Mornings for the Russian Speaking Community
  • Wednesday Evenings for an after school and pre-dinner break and
  • Thursday mornings for under-5s and their carers.

Visit the Russian-Language playgroup or the Wednesday evening/Thursday morning playgroup.

Sunday mornings

Children are welcome to stay with their parents in church or join in Kids' Club which congregates in three age groups after the beginning of the service.

  • Under 5 year olds - Sand and Gravel
  • 5 to 8 year olds - Pebbles
  • 8 year old and more - BLAST

They then rejoin their parents in time to receive communion or a blessing.  Toilets and nappy changing facilities are available both in the church and in the parish hall.  For those staying with their parents, there are pew bags available with soft toys and material to help them engage with the service.  At the end of the service there is a children’s reception of juice and biscuits.

St James and St John is a local Church of England Primary School which St John's shares responsibility for with the neighbouring St James', Sussex Gardens. The school community is a microcosm of the multicultural society benefiting from the diversity of faiths and backgrounds.
