Reformation 500 begins

Last Sunday was the beginning of our special series of St John's Late services exploring some of the influences, driving forces and individuals involved in the Reformation. To begin with we were transported back to pre-reformation Britain, to a church with no chairs, a large screen and the entire service in Latin. We learned of the attempts by Francis and Erasmus to reform the Church from within and experienced the deep division between clergy and the laity. These services are an opportunity to combine historical and theological education in the context of prayer and liturgy. The following services will visit the Reformers responses in Germany (Luther), Switzerland (Zwingli) and France (Calvin) before returning to Britain with Cranmer.
