Maundy Thursday Eucharist with Washing of Feet

Maundy Thursday (from mandatum, ‘commandment’, because of the use of John 13.34: «I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another») contains a rich complex of themes: humble Christian service expressed through Christ’s washing of his disciples’ feet (represented in today's liturgy), the institution of the Eucharist, the perfection of Christ’s loving obedience.

The service finishes with a silent vigil of prayer in darkness remembering Jesus own prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane.
