Jenny Clark Memorial Concert

Julien Van Mellaerts was a Choral Scholar at St John's in the 2016 to 2017 academic year, during which time he received the 62nd Kathleen Ferrier Award.

After the 10am service grab a glass of something and find a seat as Julien will be singing for this year's Jenny Clark Memorial concert.

Julien has just completed his second year of the RCM International Opera School studying with Dinah Harris as a Fishmongers’ Company Scholar supported by a Toeman Weinberger Award. In July 2015, Julien graduated from The Royal College of Music with a Masters of Performance with Distinction. Before moving to London, to continue his studies, Julien studied music (under Terence Dennis and Flora Edwards) and languages at the University of Otago, NZ. 

Julien has been awarded the Kiwi Music Scholarship for 2016, administered by Universities New Zealand, he has recently won the 2016 Joan Chissell Schumann Song Prize, the 2016 Brooks-Van Der Pump English Song Competition, was a finalist in the 2016 Oxford Lieder Festival Young Artist Competition and winner of the 2015 Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards at the Wigmore Hall. With duo partner, Somi Kim, they recently competed in the International Vocalisten Concours ‘sHertogenbosch, in the Netherlands, where they were semi finalists.

Julien has appeared in recital at the Oxford Lieder Festival, London Song Festival, Ryedale Festival, St Martin’s-in-the-Fields, the premiere of a song cycle by Lewis Murphy at New Zealand House, and Schubert's Die Winterreise with Roger Vignoles. Upcoming recitals and performances include: Messiah and St John Passion with Orchestra of St Johns; Concert series in Beirut with the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra with the Peace and Prosperity Trust this December; Baritone soloist for Carmina Burana at Snape Maltings as part of the Aldeburgh Festival; St Matthew Passion with Sheffield Choral Society.

Operatic roles include: Gabriel von Eisenstein, Die Fledermaus; Mr Gedge, Albert Herring; Monsù Traversen, La Gazzetta (RCMIOS); Danilo, The Merry Widow (Ryedale Festival); Aeneas, Dido and Aeneas (Cheltenham Bach Choir). This summer, Julien performed the role of Schaunard in La Bohème for Opera Holland Park, as a Christine Collins Young Artist. This Autumn, Julien will play the role of Nardo in Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera at the RCMIOS.
