St George's Chapel & Library, Windsor Castle

  • The Duchess of Cambridge 3-4 Thames Street Windsor, SL4 1PL United Kingdom

Culture Vulture Ventures celebrates the Queen's 90th birthday with a trip to Windsor Castle.

We meet at 12 noon for lunch on Thursday May 5th at the Duchess of Cambridge, an independent hostelry just 2 minutes walk from both the station and castle. The Chapel Librarian will meet us at the Henry VIII Gateway at 1pm to conduct our tour of the Chapel Archives and Chapter Library, following which we will be given a guided tour of St George’s Chapel, lasting from approximately 2:30pm to 4pm.

Among the treasures in the Chapter Library, which contains over 6,000 rare books are an early handwritten New Testament in English and one of the first books to be printed in England. The Chapel was founded in 1348 by Edward III and is home for the sovereign's principal order of chivalry, the Order of the Garter. Henry VIII is buried in the Garter Chapel and more recently the funerals of King George VI, Queen Mary, and Princess Margaret took place there, after which they were laid to rest inside the Chapel. Please give Margaret £15 to pay for the tours. Lunch to be paid individually on the day.
