Gospel is a music genre in Christian music. The creation, performance, significance and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. It is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure and religious or ceremonial purposes. The music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics. It can be traced to the early 17th century, with roots in the black oral tradition. Most of the churches relied on singing a cappella with hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment.
This Advent the anthems in our 10am Sunday Eucharist will come from Disney and DreamWorks. As well as telling many Christian stories, Disney and DreamWorks movies have, over the years, engaged with implicit Christian themes in more subtle ways, such as: to believe in yourself, to chase your dreams, and to have courage and be kind. Each week in Advent the choir will be singing a song from an animated film.
Today the Hyde Park Estate gathered together along with horse riders and enthusiasts from across London and the South of England for the annual Blessing of the Horses. Started by Ross Nye, one of the local muse stables, 49 years ago to bring together the London horse riding community and draw attention to the challenges in maintaining horse riding in central London.
From 29 May to 31 July the choir will begin a series of anthems drawn from popular culture, but with obvious religious overtones. Visit the music page to see what's coming up.
