Gospel is a music genre in Christian music. The creation, performance, significance and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. It is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure and religious or ceremonial purposes. The music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics. It can be traced to the early 17th century, with roots in the black oral tradition. Most of the churches relied on singing a cappella with hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment.

From the 22nd January to the 26th February our anthems during the 10am Eucharist will be taken from some of the best composers versions of the Jubilate including Walton, Chilcott, Britten, Gabrieli, Handel and Purcell. Based on Psalm 100, the Jubilate was part of the ancient Jewish Temple Liturgy and is part of the Book of Common Prayer’s Morning Prayer.
This Advent the anthems in our 10am Sunday Eucharist will come from Disney and DreamWorks. As well as telling many Christian stories, Disney and DreamWorks movies have, over the years, engaged with implicit Christian themes in more subtle ways, such as: to believe in yourself, to chase your dreams, and to have courage and be kind. Each week in Advent the choir will be singing a song from an animated film.
