For over 45 years St John’s,
Hyde Park has been welcoming Americans in London.
We are in the heart of a community
where many Americans live during their stay in the city, and it seems they are
naturally drawn to the lively international community which worships at St
John’s.
We are one of the four London
churches that take part in the annual Thanksgiving Day Service in St
Paul’s Cathedral. We find that many families and individuals
from across the US who join our community in London stay in touch for years
after they have returned home—and come back to visit us on vacation.
St John’s
is immensely proud of its international community and we take hosting families
and individuals while they are living in London
very seriously. We know that it can be
very strange settling into an unfamiliar city and country and we make every
effort to integrate new members into our congregation.
We’re open and welcoming of all, and
on any given Sunday morning you may find people from Africa,
Europe and America
worshiping along side one another. We
have people of commerce and industry, diplomats, travellers, writers and
students along with local residents and young families. This means we are
rooted in a wide variety of theological and church backgrounds. It adds to the richness of our community and
makes St John’s a learning
experience for all.
Our services might be very
different to those which you are used to in the US. A stay in London,
however, gives you chance to experience something new and classically English.
And at St John’s, we hope, amongst
friends and a supporting community. If
your background is in the Episcopal Church our worship it may not be too
different from what you have experienced before.
Our liturgy is classically
Church of England and modern catholic in style. We have good choral music and
thought-provoking sermons. The diversity
of theological and church backgrounds in our community is powerfully on display
in our Bible studies and educational courses.
The clergy take preaching very
seriously. Each week the sermon will be
rooted in one or more of the three scripture readings used during the service
as well as everyday experience of life. St
John’s attempts to facilitate debate, to value
people’s experience and to tackle the church debates of the day with an
atmosphere of respect and tolerance.
After the main service we have coffee
or drinks—which often last for as long as the service does! This is where we make
new friends and get to know one another better.
If you are new to London
give us a try on Sunday mornings at 10 am…
it won’t be long before you feel right at home.
Make St
John’s, Hyde Park your church
in London.
