Nearly everyone who comes to St John’s comments on the warmth of
our welcome. It’s something we’re really proud of. It’s nowhere more
evident than after the service. That’s when we get to know each other
better over coffee or a glass of wine.
It’s amazing who you get to know at a church as large and diverse as
ours. With people coming from all over London—and indeed the south of
England—there’s always someone new to meet. Chatting over
refreshments after church is an important part of our life at St
John’s. It’s virtually impossible to be a Christian on your own, and
the quality of the relationships we make says a lot about who we are.
That’s why we like to be as social as we can, getting to know each
other and enjoying each others company as friends as well as fellow
worshippers.
Normally after church we have coffee and
cake. But we take any excuse to up the ante a bit. We have receptions
with fizz and home-made hors d’oeuvres after special services, and
plenty of mulled wine, mince pies and panettone at Christmas. Our
newest tradition is flaming Drambuies at Pentecost and in the summer,
when he’s in a good mood, the Vicar invites us all over for Buck’s Fizz
and sparkling wine on the vicarage terrace!
We know life isn’t one long party, but we do our best.
